Documenting The Illustrative Design ProcessCreated by Von. R. Glitschka

Illustrating for an embroidery patch that will be 1.875 x 1.875 inches is challenging to say the least. You’re dealing with a production technology that is very limiting. Gradient blends at this size just look terrible so you have to keep your colors flat and detail needs to be simplified.

The following tutorial will show how I go about creating a set of NBA licensed embroidery patches featuring portraits of many of the leagues greatest players.

  3. Hey von those are really nice.

  4. Your tutorials are amazing.

Do you do the drawing by just eyeing it or actually trace from the photograph?

Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and skills with these tutorials.

  5. These are all based on photos and I draw on top of them so as to keep proportions accurate.

But the process entails eyeballing in that you have to visually look at the photos and determine how to simplify the facial forms and details so it works in this format while still obviously picking up the needed characteristics to retain player recognition.

It all comes down to balancing what will be black, what will remain white and what will be grey.

Sometimes I have to draw them a few times before it looks right and captures the persons attributes accurately.

Due to budget I don’t just free style draw these, it would just take too long so part of the process is to secure the best source photos to work from and my client has an endless resource and archive of images to facilitate the arts creation.

Hope that explains it a little better. The tutorials images go over this more in depth though.

    Von
