Documenting The Illustrative Design ProcessCreated by Von. R. Glitschka

Not all my projects afford me the time I’d like to create them. Such is the case with this project. I was given all the information about four days before it was due, but the problem is I couldn’t get to it until the day before the deadline. Sometimes things work out this way, and you just have to roll with the punches.

Needless to say having the perfect reference was going to be paramount in my creative process. When this is the case nothing beats creating and controlling the reference myself. As you’ll see in this tutorial, it aided me to meet a very tight deadline all the while producing high quality artwork.

Source files are included in this download so you can manually de-construct the method I used to create my reference imagery.

(Tutorial Includes Notes in both ‘English’ and ‘Español’.)

  2. Hi Von,

Just found your site today. What an incredible service to all us working to improve our drawing and illustration skills! Thank you for your generosity!

I have a question: it appears you are doing this and other assignments showcased in your tutorials in Photoshop – does that include the vector part of the work? Or do you switch over to Illustrator for that? Do you purposely chose not to use LiveTrace in Illustrator?

    Take care,

    Jonathan Gilpin

  4. Thank you.

It’s a simple word but all I could think of. I’m new to reductive art techniques and after searching all over for a week now, this is the first place/book/class where someone actually walks you through the steps, slowly and completely.

All I would like to see more of, although it’s probably very hard, would be a deeper discussion on how you choose the tracing lines. I know it’s an “artistic choice,” but do you have any idea what you search for, or what you see when you make your choice?

Thanks again for taking the time and putting forth the effort.

  5. Lou,

You define what is hard to teach. In a nutshell it’s a matter of drawing your forms until they look right and feel right. That skill like any other skill improves with age as you do it more and more.

I look back on stuff I did five years ago and cringe so it’s process of growth that you’ll just have to work through as you create your artwork.

  6. Hi Von

I just wanted to ask you how do we see the tutorials. do we supposed to see the illustrations in the word documents or just the title of every illustration?

Every time I open the notes file all i see is text and the title of the illustrations (pictures) on the side of every step.

thank you for taking the time. Simply the best illustration site.:)

  7. Go to “FYI/HELP” listed on in the left side navigation and you’ll find out how to view the tutorials and other helpful information. It’s pretty low-tech really. Just a text file with notes for each image.

But read that and you’ll understand how to use them.

    Von
