Communication is the key with icons. By their very nature they are suppose to communicate ideas and concepts quickly and easily. This iconic art form has various types of applications such as GUI (Graphic User Interface) and print. GUI icons are pixel based where as print icons are almost always vector based. The style on either type can vary too but the common bond between all icons is simplicity and clarity of communication.

This tutorial will walk you though the process of creating a set of presentation icons for a software company.

Source files are included in this download so you can manually de-construct the icon art and see how it was created.

Can you create a unique illustrative solution using a limited library of basic shapes? Well that is the challenge put forth by a project called ‘Vormator’ in this simple tutorial.

Using a provided set of basic shapes I have to compile them to create my illustration. The theme is up to me but there are some ground rules such as you cannot edit the shapes or distort them, you however can subtract from them using any of the shapes in the provided set.

Source files, and additional information about ‘Vormator’ are provided in this download so you can test your own creativity and see what you come up with.
