Documenting The Illustrative Design ProcessCreated by Von. R. Glitschka

Creating a logo for a company that thrives on creativity seems like it would be a no-brainer project. Well that isn’t always the case. This illustrative logo for an italian animation studio will show you a very quick turnaround and the design politics we sometimes have to deal with in our artistic pursuit to create the best work we can.

  1. another excellent tutorial. i can’t believe that after all that, they chose the one without the dot of life. i think that added so much to the illustration.

    beautiful work. thank you!

  2. at step 31, how did you round off all those vertices? This is great, being able to see the process is so valuable.

  3. There are a few ways to do this.

    In CS2 Illustrator:
    - First off change measurement rules to points (Easier)
    - Select Vector Shape
    - Go to Effects/Stylize/Round Corners
    - Plug in radius you want (10 pts. etc.)
    - Adjust until you like what you see and click OK

    In CS2 Illustrator:
    - First off change measurement rules to points (Easier)
    - Begin drawing a few points of your vector shape
    - Go to Effects/Stylize/Round Corners
    - Plug in radius you want and click OK
    - Continue drawing to see rounding as you create on the fly

Warning: Illustrator handles most angles well but on severe angles it just can’t handle it well and on those areas you’ll have to go in and do it manually using a circle shape and the pathfinder pallette.

    In FreeHand MX
    - First off change measurement rules to points (Easier)
    - Select vector shape
    - Open Inset Path Tool
    - Punch in positive number (5 pts.) to inset shape and click OK
    - Re-select shape and Open Inset Path Tool again
    - In ‘Join’ menu select ‘Rounded’ corner
    - Punch in the same number but negative (-5 pts.) and click OK
    - You shape will now be rounded off

FreeHand handles severe vertices better then CS2 on this but still on some extreme angles it just cannot do it mathematically so you’ll still have to build some content by hand.

For more on this type ‘Round Off Technique’ in the search pane and you can download a tutorial specifically covering all of this.

    Thanks.

    Von
